NJ SREC Help
Producing solar power, but struggling with the paperwork or payments?
Solar Advocates helps New Jersey homeowners understand their solar-credit records, work through reporting questions, and identify the next step when certificates or payments seem to be missing—even if the original installer is no longer available.
Get Help With My NJ SRECsWhat are SRECs?
SREC stands for Solar Renewable Energy Certificate. One certificate represents 1,000 kilowatt-hours (1 megawatt-hour) of eligible solar generation. It can provide income separate from the electricity savings on your bill. Your system’s approved program and certificate-ownership agreement determine which credits and payments apply.
Read the NJ program administrator’s certificate explanation.
SREC, TREC, or SREC-II: which do I have?
New Jersey has different solar incentive programs. Older systems may participate in the legacy SREC program; Transition Incentive systems use TRECs; eligible Successor Solar Incentive (SuSI) systems use SREC-IIs. Check your NJ certification and approval documents rather than assuming today’s program applies to your system.
Are solar credits the same as net metering?
No. Net metering concerns your utility bill and electricity flows. Solar certificates track eligible generation separately, including power used at home. Receiving utility bill credits does not, by itself, confirm that solar-certificate reporting and payment arrangements are complete.
How we can help
- Registration and paperwork: review the records you have, identify missing information, and organize questions for the appropriate administrator.
- GATS reporting: help you understand generation records, reporting responsibilities, and gaps or errors that need follow-up.
- Missing certificates: compare the available records to identify where the process needs attention.
- Delayed payments: help organize correspondence and payment-status questions for your administrator, aggregator, or buyer.
- Installer no longer available: help you piece together the records and contacts needed to move forward.
How do generation records become payments?
The typical path is program approval, registration of the system in PJM’s Generation Attribute Tracking System (GATS), generation reporting, certificate creation, and the applicable transfer or payment process. For TREC and SREC-II systems, a payment account and certificate-transfer arrangements are part of the process. The correct route depends on your program.
My app shows production. Why am I not seeing certificates?
Monitoring data and GATS reporting are separate. Generation can be reported by the account holder or an authorized third-party reporter; check which arrangement your system uses. We can help identify what has been recorded and which step needs follow-up. PJM GATS explains reporting and certificate creation.
I missed a reading or entered the wrong number. What should I do?
Keep your meter readings and reporting history. The appropriate correction depends on whether later periods or certificates have already been processed. We can help organize the records and questions; GATS support may need to assist with corrections. Avoid guessing at missing values.
I lease my panels or have a PPA. Do I receive the credits?
Check the agreement to see who owns the certificates and who is responsible for reporting them. Having panels on your roof does not establish your right to the certificate income. Share the relevant terms so we can help identify the questions to resolve.
What does SREC help cost?
Start with an assessment of your issue. We agree on the scope and fee before work begins. This is separate from the $199 nationwide proposal-review service. New Jersey solar-credit guidance is also included within the support allowance of our Monitoring + Advocacy plan.
What should I send?
- Your New Jersey town and ZIP code, installation date if known, and original installer.
- Your program approval or certification letter and GATS unit information, if available.
- Relevant production records, reporting confirmations, and correspondence about the issue.
- A short description of what you expected to happen and what you are seeing instead.
Do not send passwords, Social Security numbers, or bank-account details. If you are missing records, tell us what you have and we’ll start there.
