Help Before Installing Solar

Get clear on the offer before you commit.

Looking for help installing solar? Start by understanding the decisions you need to make before installation. Solar Advocates helps homeowners review proposals; the installer you choose is responsible for the installation itself.

Start with your home and energy use

Gather a year of electricity usage if available. Tell prospective installers about changes such as an electric vehicle or heat pump. Ask a qualified professional to evaluate roof condition and suitability rather than relying on a remote estimate alone. [5]

Ask for comparable proposals

Request written details from more than one installer. Compare system size, estimated production, equipment, total price and included work. Ask who handles permits, utility approval and inspections, and what could change the price or schedule. [2] [5]

Use these questions in your next conversation

  • What assumptions did you use for my energy use, roof shading and annual production?
  • What is the cash price, and how does the financed price differ?
  • If this is a lease or PPA, how can the payment or rate change?
  • Which utility rate and export-credit rules did you use?
  • Which incentives are included, and where can I verify current eligibility?
  • Who performs the work, and how can I check the required credentials and insurance?
  • Who handles a problem after installation, and what is covered in writing?
  • What happens if I sell the house or need to remove panels for roof work?

Pause when an answer is missing

Ask for important explanations in writing. Save the proposal and the documents you are asked to sign. Give yourself time to compare them, especially when a sales conversation creates pressure to decide immediately. [2]

Get a second look before committing

You do not need to become a solar expert to ask good questions. An independent review can help you organize the offer and see what needs clarification.

Solar Advocates offers a nationwide solar proposal review for $199. You receive a one-page assessment and a 30-minute phone Q&A. The review does not replace an installer’s site assessment, engineering work, legal advice or tax advice.

Already installed but left without support?
